2010 "Rising Above" 1200 Sq Ft. mural for the Copley Westin Hotel, Boston

This mural project consisting of a enlarged cross section of Eucalyptus leaves against a giant blue sky was commissioned by the Westin Hotel to brighten up what was once a dark hallway within the employee wing of the hotel. They wanted to pay tribute to those within the company that have demonstrated excellent performance, as well as thank all their employees for all their hard work.

The Hallway is approximately 65 ft. long and the project took about a month and a half to complete.

2009 "Urban Wilds" Copley Square, Boston

This painting of a utlity box was done as part of a public art initiatve sponsored by The Boston Art Commission.

This is my third Public Art Project in Boston. It's located on a traffic island at the intersection of Huntington Ave and Dartmouth Street in Copley Square, in between the Boston Public Library and the Westin Hotel.

The actual image itself is loosely based on an original oil painting I made in 2007 with the same title, but the inpsiration for choosing wildflowers and grasses as the subject for this Copley mural stems from the very wildflowers and grasses that can be seen growing around the traffic fixtures throughout the square. These urban wilds are all around us, growing in places we would least expect and often breaking through 6 inches of concrete. Nature never ceases to amaze me.

I am hoping others will help keep our natural world thriving by sponsoring the Boston Parks Dept.'s Urban Wilds Initiative. A great program that works to preserve the remaining natural ecosystems found in our great city.

APPRECIATION AND THANKS:

A huge thanks to Ashley Adler, my phenomenal assistant who helped me transport supplies, set up every morning, clean up every day, inform the public about the project, and kept me company. I faced several days painting with 25 to 30 mph winds and cold temps and Ashley's help just made things that much easier. I can't thank her enough. Another big thanks to Kevin Rooney for helping me scrape off stickers and clean, sand, and prime the box before we started painting. Thanks to Liquitex technical support for their excellent advice on outdoor mural materials and varnishing. Thanks to all the staff at the Starbucks on Dartmouth St. for making us feel at home during this entire process and providing us with water and a warm place to take breaks. Thanks to the City of Boston and the Boston Art Commission for making this possible. And finally, a big thanks to the People of Boston for all their incredible support of the Arts. This artwork is dedicated to them!

Boston University produced video about the Paintbox program, as well as on camera interviews can be viewed here: BU STUDENT SHOWCASE

Presentation at Mountview Middle School, Holden MA on 2/11/2010

I was invited to Mountview Middle School in Holden, MA to speak to art students about my art. I gave them a slide presentation and showed them some video footage of my public art projects.

These were some very bright students that asked some tough questions! This was a very rewarding experience and reminded me of how important it is to bring real world experiences into the classroom.

The students made me custom designed thank you cards following my visit, a very thoughtful way to mark such a memorable experience.
