This painting was inspired
from a patch of flowering weeds, grasses, and wild trees I found
growing along the fences by the Mass Pike, near the Washington
Street bridge. Surrounded by asphalt, concrete, and traffic;
this vibrant, beautiful, and peaceful scene was so green and
thriving. When viewed close up, it is in such stark contrast
to its surroundings that it seems to be part of a completely
separate world. This is the essence of urban wilds, and demonstrates
how nature is always around us, and always finds a way to survive.

I just completed a custom mosaic
for a client in Boston. The design consists of intertwining olive
tree branches and it involved hand cutting carefully selected marble
tiles into 3/8" and smaller shapes and then hand fastening
each tile with thinset mortar, one by one, to the project surface.
The finished mosaic consists of over 20,000 individual pieces of
stone.
Below is a short video demonstrating
how the mosaic was constructed:

"Rising
Above" 1200 Sq Ft. mural for the Copley Westin Hotel, Boston
This
mural project consisting of a enlarged cross section of Eucalyptus
leaves against a giant blue sky was commissioned by the Westin Hotel
to brighten up what was once a dark hallway within the employee
wing of the hotel. They wanted to pay tribute to those within the
company that have demonstrated excellent performance, as well as
thank all their employees for all their hard work.
Presentation
at Mountview Middle School, Holden MA
I
was invited to Mountview
Middle School in Holden, MA to speak
to art students about my art. I gave them a slide presentation
and showed them some video footage of my public art projects.
These
were some very bright students that asked some tough questions!
This was a very rewarding experience and reminded me of how important
it is to bring real world experiences into the classroom.

This
public art project titled "Urban Wilds" is based on
an original oil painting I made in 2007, but inspired for Copley
Square by the very wildflowers that can be seen growing around
the many traffic fixtures in the square. These
urban wilds are all around us, growing in places we would least
expect and often breaking through 6 inches of concrete. Nature
never ceases to amaze me.
I
am hoping others will help keep nature thriving by sponsoring
the Boston Parks Dept.'s Urban
Wilds Initiative. A great program that works to preserve
the remaining natural ecosystems found in our great city.
